Predator Fishing on Lake Volkerak: Zander, Perch & Pike with UFX Guides

Volkerak – Challenging Predator Fishing for Pike, Perch and Zander

The Volkerak is a large, open body of water with very little margin for error. Vast expanses, changing depths, mussel beds, and open wind lanes mean that every decision has immediate consequences. Mistakes don’t go unnoticed here — they accumulate.

Fishing here means you cannot rely on fixed spots or routine. Casting is central. Covering water, working consistently, and thoroughly searching areas. Long periods without direct feedback are part of the game. Physically, mentally, and technically, this water demands full focus throughout the entire day.

The Volkerak’s reputation as a demanding fishery is not a label, but the logical result of its characteristics. Size, depth, and constantly changing conditions ensure that this water gives nothing away and exposes every mistake.

You don’t choose the Volkerak as a safe option — you choose it deliberately, as a challenge in its own right.

Casting for Pike, Perch and Zander on the Volkerak

The Volkerak is a water made for committed casting. Large open areas, little defined structure, and constantly changing conditions make this approach the most effective way to fish it with intent.

Those who cast here fish distance. Areas are worked methodically, casts are repeated, depth and lure action are kept under control. Often, nothing happens for long periods. That is exactly where the challenge lies: staying focused, working cleanly, and giving the water time to respond.

When things come together, the Volkerak can produce exceptional fish. Big zander, powerful pike — moments you cannot force. But even then, this water remains unpredictable. Even well-executed days can end without results.

Casting on the Volkerak is physically demanding, mentally challenging, and technically uncompromising. It is not a side option or an easy choice, but a deliberate decision to fish a water that demands everything and gives nothing for free.

Clear Focus on Pike, Zander and Perch

The Volkerak is a versatile predator fishery where zander, pike, and perch are present in meaningful numbers. Like on any large open water, the stock is mainly made up of average-sized fish. Catching numbers is part of the reality here as well, with days of steady action and regular contact.

The difference compared to the Hollands Diep is not in the general size distribution, but in the upper end. On the Volkerak, the chances of encountering truly large fish are significantly higher across all three species. Opportunities, yes — guarantees, no.

Zander are the primary focus of the guiding and are present in all size classes. Alongside consistent catches, there are also documented cases of exceptional fish, including a recorded zander of 114 cm — rare, outstanding, and never guaranteed — but the potential is always there.

Perch are a fixed part of the system. Most fish are average-sized, but a perch over 50 cm is a realistic possibility on the Volkerak for anglers who consistently cast and work areas thoroughly.

Pike are present in good numbers as well, ranging from average fish to true outliers. The Dutch record pike of 138 cm was caught on the Volkerak and illustrates the extreme potential of this water. It is not a benchmark, but it is part of the reality of the system.

All of these opportunities come at a clear cost. The Volkerak is more difficult to fish, technically and mentally demanding, and it offers little margin for error. The chance of an exceptional fish is higher — there are no guarantees.

Note: Occasional reports of extreme catches (e.g. zander over 1 meter) do exist, but they are rare and not always verifiable. We keep it honest: opportunities, yes — guarantees, no.

Safety and weather conditions

The Volkerak is a large, open body of water without sheltered areas. Wind can quickly build waves here and change the situation within a short time. Safety is therefore not a side note, but a fundamental requirement for every fishing day.

In strong winds (from around 4–5 Bft and above), a fishing day will in practice often be rescheduled — particularly with winds from west to southwest, as the water is fully exposed in that direction. The final decision always depends on the overall conditions on the water. This is based on experience and a realistic assessment of risk — not on excessive caution. No fish is worth taking unnecessary risks.

If the Volkerak is not safely fishable on the planned date due to weather conditions, the trip will be rescheduled. Alternatively, if conditions allow and a suitable backup water is available, we may switch to another location in consultation. In that case, the fishing day will go ahead without any right to a refund.

Booking the Volkerak means accepting this dependency on wind and weather. It is not an exception, but part of fishing this water.

Booking and Terms & Conditions

A guiding trip on the Volkerak is set up as a full-day trip and lasts 8 hours. Fishing is done from the boat, with a maximum of two guests on board. Trips are available from Monday to Friday.

Fishing on the Volkerak is strictly casting-based.
Pelagic fishing and trolling are not offered. For pelagic fishing, the UFX Pelagic Pike & Zander experience is available, guided by my colleague Goran.

Fishing takes place year-round, with the exception of the legally required artificial lure closed season in the Netherlands. This runs from April until the last Saturday of May. No guiding trips take place during this period.

If the Volkerak is not safely fishable on the planned date due to weather conditions, the trip will be rescheduled.
Alternatively, if conditions allow and a suitable backup water is available, we may switch to another location. In that case, the guiding day will proceed without any right to a refund, as the booked trip is still being carried out.

If you prefer a less demanding water with more stable conditions, the Hollands Diep is a better option.

There are no guarantees regarding catch, size, or number of fish. What you book is a full day of fishing under real conditions — not a result.
